As of now, we are currently focused on using ABM's (Anti Ballistic Missiles) to protect our citizens, cities, etc against such threats from state and non state actors. While the use of lasers to destroy missiles has been documented, their use has been restricted to platforms on planes, trucks, and such. The idea of "force fields" are not new but using lasers by bending them to form a shape could, theoretically be used to defend cities and large populations. In 2009, scientists were able to bend lasers. Try bending it into a concave/bowl shape and maintain such a field for a significant amount of time, would be key
